Joseph Richardson was born in Loudoun County, VA around 1748, and died in Rockingham County NC around 1817. He married Sarah Compton in Loudoun County, VA, in 1769. Lt. Joseph Richardson served in the following ways during the Revolutionary War: Returned in 1776 from an expedition against the Indians from as far as Cherokee Territory. After that he was in the Continental Army until the close of the Revolutionary War. He started from Bottetourt County, VA, as a Sereant. Records list him as an Ensign, January 6, 1777, Second Lieutenant, July 1777, and as retiring June 1, 1778 . A roster of soldier in the American Revolution shows him, while an Ensign, enlisting for a three-year term of service in the 6th NC Battalion, and an old letter shows that he was a Lieutenant under Capt. Gillespie who was killed at the Battl e of Guilford Courthouse in Guilford County, NC.
