Timeline

1759 – Born in Harford County MD, Father John Stephen Prebble, Jr, Mother Elizabeth Lowe, Mother apparently died from complications of childbirth.

 

1761 – Father remarries in MD to Clemency Bond

 

1762 – Birth of half brother James born in MD

 

1766 – Family moves to Bedford Co. VA, John states that he was 7 years old when they moved.

1767 – While in Bedford Co. John Stephen Prebble, Jr. sells land with home in MD, 50 acres to Joseph Reese.

1773Half sister, Millicent is born in MD, John’s Father and Step-Mother have moved back to MD. No indication that John b. 1759 moved with them. He indicated in his Rev. War Pension Application that he lived in VA since 1766. He was at this time 14 years old. No indication of other relatives in VA. It is possible, but unknown that there was extended family in the VA area.

 

1774Half brother John Stephen Prebble III is born in PA.  John’s father lived in PA for several years. Later living in KY, where he died in 1804

 

1777 – John is enlisted in the VA Militia, takes Oath of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia, is in a Company of Militia commanded by Capt. Gwantkins formed in Bedford County VA and marched to Boonesborough KY, where they served under the command of Col. Daniel Boone in defense of the Boonesborough settlement against the Shawnee Native Americans supported by the English Army. John’s company was there at the time of Daniel Boone’s capture by the Shawnee led by Blackfish. Also captured were several members of John’s company.

1778 - John’s company marches back to Bedford Co. VA in 1778. There he is discharged from this tour of Duty. Later this year he serves another tour of duty at the Lead Mines in VA.

1780 – Married to Elizabeth Mason

1781 - Marched to Battle of Guilfford Courthouse in NC. In March and back to VA in April where he was discharged.

 

John and Elizabeth live and farm in Campbell Co. VA, formed from Bedford County.

They are the ancestors of all of the known Prebble and Pribble families to later reside in Virginia.

 

Burial site – Family Cemetery on the Farm they owned.
